Great Adventure (Six Flags)

History:

greatadventure.gif Great Adventure opened to the public in 1974 as a combination amusement park and safari. The brainchild of Warner LeRoy and Charley Stein, Great Adventure was for them a way to cash in on the 'theme park' concept made popular first by Walt Disney and then by Six Flags. LeRoy, who is probably more well known as the owner of Maxwell's Plum, Tavern on the Green and The Russian Tea Room, was a natural to the idea of creating a themed environment. He had already done so succefully in Broadway shows he directed, and then with the restaurants he owned and operated, which were some of the first restaurants to use ideas like "theming" to attract its customers.
